On the whole, this is a good cookbook that teaches how to create cheap good quality meals. However, the price break down of each ingredient that goes with each recipe reveals the truth. It is a outright lie that each recipe in this book will only cost you less than $5, and here is why. The price of the ingredients is based on individual servings. Why I am sure that a single carrot costs only 23 cents as the author suggests, since when have you seen a single carrot for sale at the market? Also, in the recipe for chuck roast, it calls for a single bouillon cube (cost: 30 cents) and one garlic glove (cost 1 cent.) I have never seen a single bouillon cube or single glove of garlic for sale in my life. This book’s title is very misleading. If you think you will walk into a market with 5 bucks and out with enough items to make a single recipe in this book, you are fooling yourself. The items needed to make the recipes in this book can not be bought in individual servings, they are sold in bunches or in jars or cans. Buy this book, just don’t spend more than five bucks for it.

Save your money on this one. First, it is too costly for what is provided. I was enticed by what other readers had written. However, once I received my ordered copy, I was disapointed. One example is the listing of soda as the beverage to go with some of her planned meals. For those so inclined, there are a variety of recipes for popcorn. I have planned and prepared frugal meals for my large family for over 30 years. This is not a cookbook that I would suggest to save you money in the kitchen.

I bought this book a couple days ago (the Kindle edition) and have read through the recipes looking for some new frugal recipes to try. Overall, the selection of the recipes are varied and some would be considered gourmet. Can’t wait to try them and we will as I plan on doing a cooking session tomorrow. Most of the recipes will be prepped, cooked and frozen for later use.

Of note two of the recipes seem to be missing ingredients in the ingredients list. The Curried Chicken recipe says to cook the broccoli until desired texture but there is no mention in the ingredients list on how much broccoli to buy. The Tuna Casserole recipe says to add the celery to the skillet along with onions and garlic. The ingredients list does not specify how much celery to use nor does mention celery at all. For a novice cook this could cause problems. For seasoned cooks, who are usually confident, we’ll wing it and toss in some broccoli or celery until “it looks right”.

With a lot of recipes, some I loved, others I like, some are not my thing, but the advice in the book is great with money saving tips that I would have not thought of. Great Budget lovers and frugal friendly recipe book. For the price, you can’t beat it.

I love to cook and when I saw Jaci Rae live singing, I had no idea that she also wrote and was a recipe and money saving guru. I checked out her recipes online and tried some before I bought the book and they are great. Her money saving ideas are unique and they are also included with recipes in this book. She is so talented it’s amazing. She write, she sings and she does so much of it without cost for consumers. At this price, you can’t miss with this book. Check out her music too, you won’t be disappointed. She is an amazing artist and writer and cook.
